Dissolved metals can give spa water a greenish, brown or yellow
tint. (However, surfaces will not be slippery, as they would be
with an algae infestation.) The most common causes are:
Fill Water. Trace metals may occur naturally in your local,
city or well water. If metals are detected shortly after filling
the spa or topping it off, they are probably in the fill water.
Water Imbalance. Low pH (below 7.2) and low total alkalinity
(below 80 ppm) can cause corrosive conditions that leach iron and
copper from metal pool components. Copper is the most common metal
source, especially in heated pools or spas. Although there is no
home test for metal content, you can clear up green water and prevent
stains and metal deposits with an application of SpaTime®
Stain and Scale Control.
