Opening up your spa or hot tub the right way will save time, expense and frustration later on. If the spa is part of a pool, follow the steps for pool opening. If it is a separate unit, follow the steps below:

  1. Remove the cover and drain the spa if necessary.
  2. Remove all plugs and re-install any fittings that were removed during spa closing. Replace the skimmer and weir.
  3. Reinstall motor, pump, air blower and heater if they were removed.
  4. As you fill the spa, add SpaTime® Stain & Scale Control according to label directions to protect from any stain or scale producing properties of the fill water.
  5. When the spa is full, add SpaTime Water Clarifier according to label directions. This will combine any unfilterable particles in the fill water into larger masses that can then be filtered out, resulting in clear water.
  6. Test the total alkalinity level and adjust if necessary. A total alkalinity of 125-150 ppm (parts per million) is crucial to keeping pH in the desired range. (For more information, go to Testing.)
  7. Test and adjust the pH level to 7.2 — 7.6 if needed. (For more information, go to Testing.)
  8. Start the filtration system and circulate the water for at least 30 minutes.
  9. Add the SpaTime sanitizer product of choice (Chlorinating Granules, Brominating Tablets or Brominating Granules) according to label directions. (For product information, go to About Our Products.)
  10. Wait several hours and test the bromine or chlorine residual. Add more sanitizer product if needed to bring the reading to the proper residual level. Bromine levels should be maintained between 2.0 — 4.0 ppm for spas brominated with SpaTime Brominating Tablets and 3.0 — 6.0 ppm for spas sanitized with SpaTime Brominating Granules. When using SpaTime Chlorinating Granules to sanitize your spa, keep your free available chlorine level between 3.0 — 5.0 ppm.
  11. Start the heater and adjust the thermostat to the desired setting.
